Tortoises eggs hatching & first bath

These pictures show three of my Hermann's eggs hatching July 09, the whole process takes up to twelve hours, starting with a tiny hole which is punctured by the hatchlings egg tooth, it then continues to 'pip' away at the shell until it finally emerges, thirsty and tired.
I discovered these begining to hatch one morning before I set off for work - they were still working their way out when I returned eight hours later!

After several hours of hard labour, the babies receive a welcome bath & an opportunity to savour their first drink.

Tortoise table setup

These pictures were sent to me by John, who recently purchased two of my hatchling tortoises. I was very impressed by his setup which is made up of a plastic growbag tray boxed in with beech wood & built in hide - the perfect open top environment for happy healthy tortoises!

John has kindly allowed me to share pictures of his creation with other tortoise keepers.
